Shobdon to Show How it’s Done
Organisers of this year’s Shobdon Food Festival have assembled the biggest mix yet of talented local chefs and artisans to demonstrate at this year’s event. Among the line up, which includes lessons in bread making, Indian cookery, growing and cooking with herbs and plenty of seasonal British fare, are a food forager and a cake baker specialising in unusual dietary needs.
When Julia Thomas from Hereford was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, shortly after discovering she was pregnant, she radically change her diet as part of a lengthy health battle. She cut out all dairy products and after giving birth to her son, Charlie, realised there was a gap in the market for cakes she was able to eat that weren’t full of additives and preservatives. Through her company, Cake Angels, she now specialises in wheat and gluten-free creations and will be at Shobdon to show just what amazing cakes you can bake even with dietary restrictions.
Also at Shobdon this year is Liz Knight of Fine Forage Foods who a passion for all things wild. She creates amazing flavour combinations and recipes from ingredients that grow in the fields and hedgerows and when not blending herbs and spices or picking petals, Liz runs workshops on rural food skills. For lovers of more traditional fare, demonstrations by top local chefs include Andy Link from The Riverside at Aymestrey, Dean Banner from Ludlow’s Parkway Restaurant and Matthew Handley from The Stagg Inn at Titley, the first pub in the country to be awarded a coveted Michelin Star. For something spicy, don’t miss demonstrations by Rayeesa Asghar Sandys from Rayeesa’s Indian Kitchen in Hereford, artisan bakery from Peter Cook, Price the Bakers, Ludlow and top Hereford chef Stuart Leggett from Herefordshire College of Technology. All in all, the perfect ingredients for a great weekend!
This year’s Shobdon Food Festival is taking place at Shobdon Airfield as part of the Shobdon Food and Flying Festival with Herefordshire Aero Club’s aviation weekend. Along with over 50 of the region’s finest food and drink producers, bespoke arts and crafts, static aircraft displays, trial flights, live music and family entertainment makes up the schedule for June the 29th and 30th. For more information including a full schedule of demonstrations and other attractions visit www.shobdonfoodfestival.co.uk.
Shobdon Food Festival: the tasty gift that keeps on giving
Organisers of this year’s Shobdon Food Festival have announced two new charities they will be supporting this year. Megan Baker House (MBH), near Leominster, offers support for children, teenagers and adults with a variety of motor disabilities through an education process known as Conductive Education. MBH helps people with Cerebral Palsy, Dyspraxia and early on-set Parkinson’s disease, as well as people who have suffered head injuries or stroke, to gain greater levels of movement and independence.
Lee Gough, chief exec of MBH said, ‘We offer our services, both at our centre in Herefordshire and through our outreach programmes, completely free of charge which means we constantly need to be raising funds. We are thrilled that such a great local event has offered to support us. It really will make such a difference.’
With the funds raised, MBH is hoping to add an additional programme for 7-10 year olds with Dyspraxia, a neurological problem that can affect all aspects of a child’s development. They currently have a waiting list.

The Shobdon Food Festival has also agreed to support Hereford-based charity, The Little Princess Trust that provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young adults undergoing treatment for cancer. The charity was set up by the parents of five-year-old Hannah Tarplee from Herefordshire who died of a form of kidney cancer in 2005.
The Trust’s Charity Manager, Monica Glass, said, ‘Everyone connected with the Little Princess Trust is delighted to be associated with the Shobdon Food Festival and feel very privileged to be one of the charities benefiting from the event. Such wonderful local support is incredibly important to the Trust and helps us to continue to provide real-hair wigs to boys and girls that have unfortunately lost their own hair through cancer treatment.

Shobdon Food Festival Organiser, Matt Teale said: These are two fantastic charities doing truly life-changing work and we are delighted to be able to support them. Our ethos has always been to give local artisans an additional shop window for their skills while raising money for good causes and they don’t come much better, or much more local, than Megan Baker House and The Little Princess Trust.’
The Shobdon Food Festival will as usual be supporting causes within the village itself including Shobdon church. The festival takes place on June the 29th & 30th at its new home at Shobdon Airfield alongside Herefordshire Aeroclub’s Aviation Weekend. Herefordshire student named West Midlands Student of the Year
Sky Sports Living for Sport Student of the Year finalists revealed
Herefordshire - based student, Alex Griffiths of Earl Mortimer College in Leominster, has been named the Sky Sports Living for Sport Student of the Year for the West Midlands.
The Sky Sports Living for Sport Awards 2012, which recognise the efforts of students and teachers during 2012, have two categories: Student of the Year and Teacher of the Year. The Awards celebrate the successful way UK secondary schools are using Sky Sports Living for Sport, a free initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, to inspire young people through sport.
The Awards offer UK schools which have delivered a Sky Sports Living for Sport project during the 2011/12 academic year the opportunity to shine a light their pupils’ sporting journeys and share their stories of success.
Alex lacked good social skills and had low self-esteem which meant he lacked the confidence to take an active role in leadership. The aim of the project was for the students to build on their own leadership skills so that they could run the Year 6 Sport Induction Day. Athlete Mentor Mel Clarke’s visit was a great confidence boost for the group who were hugely inspired by her story of overcoming a life-threatening illness to succeed in sport. For Alex, this was the turning point in realising the Induction Day challenge could be conquered.
The Induction Day was a huge success and Alex did a particularly brilliant job, his confidence in delivery was outstanding. He was excellent at praising and encouraging the students under his leadership which made for a high work rate and enjoyment. Alex worked excellently with the team and delivered at an extremely impressive level as a result of the new skills learned through Sky Sports Living for Sport.
Joining 11 other regional finalists from across the UK, Alex has been invited to attend the national awards ceremony at Sky Studios in London on Friday 15 March 2013, where Olympic gold medal winning sprinter and Sky Sports Living for Sport Ambassador Darren Campbell will be presenting the overall Sky Sports Living for Sport Student of the Year Award 2012.
Impressed with quality of Alex’s nomination, Darren commented: “Alex’s story is a fantastic example of how sport can help young people and how Sky Sports Living for Sport has encouraged Alex to be the best that he can be.
In my role as ambassador I have seen how much of an impact Sky Sports Living for Sport is having on young people throughout the UK. It’s great to hear how these pupils’ attitudes towards both sport and education have changed and that they are putting the skills they have learnt through the programme into practice, which will help them to succeed in the future.”
The regional finalists will each receive a £50 sports voucher, a year’s free Sky Sports subscription for the student and school, a trophy and certificate, as well as the chance to be interviewed by a Sky Sports film crew. The school will also secure an extra visit from an Athlete Mentor and £500 towards their next Sky Sports Living for Sport project.
The Student of the Year 2012 will receive a £100 sports voucher and his or her school will also secure an extra visit from an Athlete Mentor and £2,000 towards their school’s next Sky Sports Living for Sport project.

The club is developing a team to take part in the UK regional and national championships as well as a youth team and intra-club fixtures. The sport is a developing sport across the world and very popular in Europe and also in East Asia, Taiwan are current World Champions and Switzerland are European Champions.

I hope someone may be able to help with more information on William Yapp born at Newton in 1852/3. He lived with his grandparents William and Sarah at Newton as a 9 year old grandson, but I do not know who his prents were, although I am descended from him and my maiden name was Yapp. William Yapp senior worked as a wheelwright at Hampton Court Castle and died in 1882, lived at Hampton Court Home, Hope Under Dinmore. If anyone has any information on the missing parents or the families please contact me on my email . Many thanks,
